There are many different looks that you may find in the English Bulldogs that you see online and when you go visit kennels. You will also find the typcial " Boxer Looking Bulldog" as many like to call them. This is not a true bulldog and this is NOT the way they should look. What is so saddening to me is when I see them with a Champion Title behind their name. It just goes to show that you can finish anything if you have enough money and time to invest into your dog. Well... THIS IS NOT WHAT WE HAVE!! English Bulldogs should not have narrow chest, long legs or long nose. This is not the standard for the English Bulldog.
We have the standard fat, short, stocky flat faced English Bulldogs that most love. You will find many breeder's adults that they are calling English Bulldogs and charging ridiculous prices for them when they are really OLDE english bulldogs. Olde English Bulldogs usually do not require C-sections or artificial insemination so that is a cheaper way to breed bulldogs but, a more profitable way for them to put an English Bulldog price on them because when they are puppies they can resemble Standard English Bulldog puppies but, when they grow and get older you will see something very different.
So, just know what you are getting before you buy it and also make sure to always ask for parents photos as the cute, cuddly puppy you may be buying might turn out ot be one ugly duckling as an adult. Not that you will not love your bulldog that you overpaid for but, it might not be what you originally thought you were buying.
Dont be persuaded into buying an "Boxer Looking Bulldog" and remember if buy an $1000 to $1500 English Bulldog that is what you get.
This is the reason our motto and slogan is " Quality is Choice"
English Bulldog History
Originally, The English Bulldog was bred for bull baiting. The object of bull baiting was pinning and holding. This was where the bulldog would take hold of the bulls nose and would not let go. The english bulldog would grab the bulls nose because it was the most tender part of the bull. The bull would render helplessly when seized by it. The bulldog was trained to play low, keeping his head close to the ground. This was done to protect the bulldog from the bulls horns when the bull attempted to throw the bulldog in the air. The bulldog was known for hardly ever letting go. Bull Baiting Took place in rope enclosures inside circular buildings. It was a very popular sport in middle ages. A very popular sport in England and was patronised by all classes of people from the rich to the poor. Many would bet on this sport and money was passed from hand to hand. Almost every town and country had their bull ring and all would come near and far to watch.
In the continuing years of these sporting events the dog owners begin to recognize a neccesary change of altering the dogs size and structure to better survive the ring. Being to heavy built and to slow in the ring, outcrosses began with other breeds and is not known today of what we call the English Bulldog.
Bringing English Bulldog Puppy Home
When your new English Bulldog Puppy arrives home remember that your puppy will require lots of
sleep, love, care, cuddling, good nutrition, and dedicated time.
1ST NIGHT HOME WITH ENGLISH BULLDOG PUPPY
The 1st night home will require patience and lots of love. They will most likely cry a little because they are in a
whole new world with new smells and a new family to get to know. It is important to let your engish bulldog puppy meet everyone but, not all at once. It is better to wait and let your english bulldog puppy adjust to his new surroundings before bringing the whole family over to meet the new english bulldog puppy. I would suggest a week before inviting friends and family members to meet your english bulldog puppy. This is what I call the adjusting time.
ENGLISH BULLDOG ROUTINE CARE
The number one thing you can do is provide a daily routine for yor english bulldog puppy. Get him adjusted to a shedule and it will make it much easier for adjusting and housetraining. Make it fun and relaxing for your new english bulldog puppy. Make him feel secure and loved in his new home. It will be scary the first night in his new home and he will miss his sibling and may cry and whine. Just show your new puppy lots of love and attention.
Feed your new puppy on the same routine as the breeder. Make sure to feed in the same place and time daily if possible. Be sure that your english bulldog puppy has his own special place for his bed. Please do not leave your bulldog puppy unattended. They are very curious and like to explore their new environment. Also, we recommend buying a puppy play pen or excercise pen. This will give him a safe place to play while their is no supervision. We have an article link on our Links page about puppy proofing your home that is very useful.
ENGLISH BULLDOG TOYS
Never Give your puppy Rawhide Toys! It swells when it get wet and can cause choking. We recommend knotted ropes and hard rubber toys as well such as the Kong. They also enjoy pig ears. They do not swell when they get wet and fall apart like paper. Cow Hooves are another tasty treat that bulldog love. It is best never to give edible treats like pig ears and cow hooves unsupervised.
ENGLISH BULLDOG FEEDING
Feeding your bulldog puppy the highest quality food is best. We recommend Nutro Natural Choice and Royal Canine puppy food. You will want to feed your bulldog 3 meals a day and 1 cup at each feeding. Please do not give wet food to your puppy as it may cause loose stool and upset tummy. It is also not good for their teeth. We mix the food to create the right amount of nutrition for our bulldogs. We also cook for our bulldogs. I cook boiled chicken, brown rice, carrots, and fresh green beans for my bulldogs and pour it over their kibble. If ever your puppy has loose stool or upset tummy I would suggest feeding boiled chicken and brown rice for a few days until it has cleared. This is highly digestible and easy on the tummy. I also supplement vanilla yogurt once a week on our bulldogs food as it adds calcium and nutrition to their diet.
ENGLISH BULLDOG HOUSETRAINING
The Key is Consistancy. Take the pup outside, preferably to the same place each time as soon as he wakes up, and about ten minutes after each meal and about every half hour when he is awake and after nap time and play time. The puppy must empty his bowels and bladder before bed time every night. Always praise your puppy when he is going and move away from the area after he is finished. Very few dogs will soil their beds so it is best to keep hm confined at night in his playpen when you cannot watch him. If you see your puppy turning circles or hunting most likely he is looking for somewhere to potty so take him outside immediately. If your puppy makes a mistake it say his name and NO! NO! and take him outside. Do not scold him unless you catch him in the act because he will not know what he is being scolded for. Praise him for good behavior with a treat.
ENGLISH BULLDOG BATHING
It is best to bathe your bulldog puppy at least once a week. We recommend using Microtek Shampoo as it is very gentle and smells wonderful. You can find the link on our links page. This shampoo is wonderful for bulldogs and it works great for all skin conditions as well. It is important to keep your bulldog coat clean and dry.
GROOMING FOR ENGLISH BULLDOGS
We reccomend getting unscented baby wipes for all your grooming needs. You can clean the wrinkles, under the rope and inside the ears between baths with the baby wipes. I would suggest cleaning these areas once a day. A clean happy bulldog makes for a healthy bulldog. We suggest to clip your bulldogs toe nails once a week on bath day as well. If you do not know how to clip your bulldog nails please do not try. Take to your vet and they will be able to show you the correct way to clip the nails.
COMMON BULLDOG HEALTH CONCERNS
Before Purchasing an English Bulldog Puppy Please find a " English Bulldog Vet" In your area. It is very important!
1. Cherry Eye - The Gland under the lower eyelid at the corner of the eye will sometime pop out. This is not as horrible as it seems and DOES NOT require IMMEDIATE surgery. It does require a trip to the vet as soon as you can get an appointment. Talk with your vet about the best option for treating the cherry eye and on occasion surgery is neccesary and your vet will discuss the options with you. The quicker your bulldog gets treatment the easier the recovery will be. Please note that is the a common issue with bulldogs.
Most Bulldog Specialist will NOT reccomend removing a cherry eye on a young puppy. It is best to wait as long as possible before removing.
2. Hot Spots - These are red, weepy, itchy spots. No one really knows what causes them. It could be fleas, food, allergies ect. Clean the area thoroughly with soap and water and apply lanolin or aloe or wash with Bigeloil. Then apply creams such as Panalog ointment, Bag Balm, or Sulfadene. You can consult with your vet for the best cream to treat the hot spot.
3. Diarrhea - Kaopektate is most usually precribed for diarrhea. Dose the amount on the dogs weight. If the diarrhea continues for 24 hours and contains any blood please consult your vet immediately.
4. Vomiting - For minor upset stomachs Pepto Bismal or Kaopectate works great. Dose accordingly to dogs weight. If it continues for more than 24 hours contact your vet.
5. Temperature - Bulldogs do not like and cannot tolerate hot weather. It is best to keep your bulldog in climate controlled area. Please do not take your bulldog for long walks in hot temperatures. It is very common for bulldogs to have heat strokes.
6. Swimming - Bulldogs cannot swim but, love water. Make sure if you have a pool to have a fence around it so that your bulldog can not jump in because they will. Many families have lost their bulldogs in cases just like this. It is very important to have a life jacket on your bulldog while around the pool area.
7. Elongated Soft Pallet - Because of the short noses this can cause a problem with breathing. The soft pallet is the skin at the base of the throat. If it is too thick or too long it can restrict their breathing. If you notice that your bulldog throw up after eating, has horrific panting, very loud snoring, or raspy breathing your bulldog could have the elongated soft pallet. Consult with your vet about the option of surgery. It is highly suggested that you do not have the surgery until the bulldog is at least a year old as the pallet is still growing.
8. Demodetic Mange - Demodetic Mange is not a genetic disease. It is not contagious. It is not like Scarscopit Mange. Demodex mites feed on the yeast in the body. Every dog carries the mite as it is based deep in the hair follicle. Sometime the mite can overtake the dog because the dog or puppy has a lowered or surpressed immune system. This happens sometimes after surgery or if the dog has been sick from virus or cold as the english bulldog immune system has been surpressed. This will cause small areas on the face, neck and front legs to lose hair and to become red. 90 percent of dogs who have localized demodetic mange will recover without any treatment. This is referred to Localized Demodetic Mange.
Can you breed the dog later? Yes, if the demodetic mange stayed localized and was treated and cleared it would be okay for breeding. On the other hand if the dog has not recovered and it turned to Generalized Demodeitc Mange it would not be advised to breed the dog. You will not see many cases of Generalized Demodetic Mange. It is where all the hair on the body falls out and it is more severe case of demodex. Vet treatment is neccesary and a vet can do a skin scraping to deter whether it is localized or generalized.
